Isabella es una ni\u00f1a dulce y cari\u00f1osa de 4 a\u00f1os a la que le encanta Peppa Pig y la m\u00fasica. En diciembre de 2019 le diagnosticaron una enfermedad relacionada con el CLCN4 (variante c. 2152C> T). Isabella vive en Ponte a Moriano, un peque\u00f1o pueblo de la provincia de Lucca, en la Toscana, con su padre Andrea, su hermano mayor, Cristiano, y yo, Ilaria, su madre. Isabella era un beb\u00e9 muy deseado y esperado. Naci\u00f3 el 6 de julio de 2016 con un parto por ces\u00e1rea programado a las 38 semanas. Era peque\u00f1a, s\u00f3lo pesaba 2 kg y 520 g, pero estaba sana. Era preciosa. Los primeros meses fueron como los de todos los reci\u00e9n nacidos, con algunos llantos, una lactancia materna algo dif\u00edcil y cambios de pa\u00f1al, pero tambi\u00e9n sus primeros sonidos y sonrisas. Fue un periodo de felicidad. Sin embargo, unas horas despu\u00e9s de su primera vacunaci\u00f3n, Isabella empez\u00f3 a mostrar rigidez, puso los ojos en blanco y casi dej\u00f3 de respirar. Estos episodios s\u00f3lo duraron unos segundos, pero, como madre, comprend\u00ed inmediatamente que algo iba mal. La llevamos a urgencias y despu\u00e9s la ingresaron en pediatr\u00eda. Entonces empezaron a hacerle pruebas: an\u00e1lisis de sangre, electrocardiogramas, electroencefalogramas, etc. Todo result\u00f3 negativo y se interpret\u00f3 que los episodios estaban causados por el reflujo. Entonces nos fuimos a casa y reanudamos nuestra vida cotidiana, intentando olvidar el suceso. Sin embargo, entonces me di cuenta de que, incluso a los seis meses, Isabella segu\u00eda sin sentarse, no rodaba y, sobre todo, lo que m\u00e1s me preocupaba, no pod\u00eda mantener la cabeza erguida. Habiendo tenido ya la experiencia de su hermano Cristiano, que naci\u00f3 prematuro y que tambi\u00e9n sufr\u00eda cierto retraso en el desarrollo motor, constatar que Isabella estaba a\u00fan m\u00e1s retrasada era inevitable. La campana de alarma fue clara y fuerte: a Isabella le pasaba algo. El diagn\u00f3stico lleg\u00f3 en diciembre de 2019. Isabella ten\u00eda una mutaci\u00f3n en el gen CLCN4. Hab\u00eda pocos casos de esta enfermedad en todo el mundo, y quiz\u00e1 \u00e9ramos el \u00fanico caso en Italia. En ese momento nos sentimos tristes, enfadados y profundamente impotentes. Los m\u00e9dicos dijeron que no se sab\u00eda mucho sobre esta enfermedad y que no hab\u00eda cura. Al tratarse de una enfermedad rara, y sabiendo que la investigaci\u00f3n tiende a producirse con las afecciones que tienen m\u00e1s casos, ten\u00edamos miedo de que Isabella permaneciera en la sombra. Pero no debe hacerlo, \u00a1es nuestro sol! La falta de investigaci\u00f3n sobre esta enfermedad y la escasez de informaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n nos hizo darnos cuenta de que tenemos un papel clave que desempe\u00f1ar para ayudar a que las cosas avancen. El diagn\u00f3stico de CLCN4 significa que nuestro futuro, y el de Isabella, no ser\u00e1 nada f\u00e1cil.
